Baseline Issues in an Airborne 650 GHz Radiometer
We describe the effects of baseline ripple in an airborne submillimeter wave radiometer, which are caused by standing waves in the quasi-optical path. These baselines can be reduced with an improvement of the calibration loads and with a pathlength modulator. We have modelled the impact of the baseline on the retrieval of the volume mixing ratio profiles of the atmospheric constituents and we w...
متن کاملMeasuring the Accuracy of MARSS—An Airborne Microwave Radiometer
An airborne microwave radiometer has been thoroughly characterized by the Met Office, using a thermalvacuum test facility and flight test data. Scan dependence due to mirror reflectivity considerations, as well as calibration target thermometry, target thermal gradients, radiometer noise, and radiometer stability are quantified. A resultant accuracy of approximately 1 K is achieved.
متن کاملWind direction over the ocean determined by an airborne, imaging, polarimetric radiometer system
The speed and direction of winds over the ocean can be determined by polarimetric radiometers. This has been established by theoretical work and demonstrated experimentally using airborne radiometers carrying out circle flights and thus measuring the full 360 azimuthal response from the sea surface. An airborne experiment, with the aim of measuring wind direction over the ocean using an imaging...
متن کاملAn airborne millimetre-wave radiometer at 183 GHz: receiver development and stratospheric water vapour measurements
The subject of this Ph.D. thesis is the redesign of an airborne water-vapour radiometer AMSOS (Airborne Millimetreand Submillimetre Observing System) and measurements conducted with the new receiver. The thesis consists of three parts and four publications. The publications are placed within the thesis after appropriate chapters. The first part is an introduction which addresses the scientific ...
متن کاملCharacterization of an Ellipsoidal Radiometer
An ellipsoidal radiometer has been characterized using a 25 mm variable-temperature blackbody as a radiant source. This radiometer is intended for separating radiation from convection effects in fire test methods. The characterization included angular response, responsivity, and purge-gas flow effect studies. The angular response measurements showed that the reflection from the radiometer cavit...
